CALDEIRA DO CABEÇO GORDO
Faial's Volcanic Heartbeat
The island's dominant feature is undoubtedly the Caldeira do Cabeço Gordo, an immense, deeply green volcanic crater plunging some 400 metres from the rim. Formed over 10,000 years ago, its scale and near-perfect symmetry are genuinely remarkable.
We were fortunate with visibility on our visit, allowing appreciation of the dense vegetation lining the steep interior slopes.
