DUNNOTTAR CASTLE
Dunnottar: Game of Thrones at the Wild Scottish Coast
Perched dramatically on a rocky peninsula, battered by the North Sea, Dunnottar Castle is one of the most famous castles in Scotland and definitely THE tourist magnet in Aberdeenshire!
🥾 The adventure starts with a scenic 15-minute walk from the free car park. It's a bit steep with uneven stairs to the castle itself, so wear comfy shoes! There is an entrance fee for the castle itself (not for the viewpoints though which are accessible any day or night time). The castle does not take cash - card payment only!
📸 For photos, golden hour/sunset here is magical. Capture the castle bathed in warm light, with the waves crashing below.
Explore further on the clifftop footpath for jaw-dropping views from every angle. (Careful, it can be a bit rugged!)
The castle has so many stories to tell: It is famous for its role in saving the Scottish crown jewels, the Honours of Scotland, from Oliver Cromwell's army. It also played a role in the Jacobite risings. The castle was the home of William Wallace and Mary Queen of Scots, and some scenes from Game of Thrones were filmed there.
