NEWBURGH

Newburgh Beach

A short drive north of Aberdeen, Newburgh Beach is an excellent spot to see marine wildlife in the UK. Around 400 seals live on the sandy banks of the River Ythan, and you can watch them safely from the other side. Whales and dolphins are also often seen close to the beach. The big, sandy beach and dunes are home to many birds, including the largest group of Eider Ducks in Europe.

When the tide goes out, you can see the remains of an old wooden shipwreck. Also the sand dunes and the rustic boat shed make it a great place to take long exposure photos. The tide here comes in and out quickly. The best time to take pictures is during the outgoing tide, no later than three hours after high tide. Seals can be seen at any time, but during high tide, they may even swim right up to you!
