PORTSOY

Charming Fishing village Portsoy

Question: "I want to visit some authentic old fishing villages in the North East. Which one can you recommend?"

You're in luck! The North East boasts many charming fishing villages like Pennan, Gardenstown, and Crovie (check out my other post about that one!).
But my personal favourite is Portsoy. It's a living, breathing community, not just a tourist summer residence.

The original name may come from Port Saoithe, meaning "saithe harbour". It is located on the Moray Firth coast, about 50 miles northwest of Aberdeen.
Its history is rich, dating back to 1550 when Mary, Queen of Scots, established it as a burgh.

The harbour itself might be the oldest natural one in Europe!

Why not join the locals and enjoy a pint at the pub conveniently situated right by the harbour?

The village hosts a fantastic Scottish Traditional Boat Festival each July, celebrating all things maritime and showcasing local crafts.

Plus, keep an eye out for the unique jewellery made from "Portsoy marble" – it was even shipped to Versailles back in the day!

Portsoy was also a filming location for Peaky Blinders. Fans of the show created a memorial at Portsoy Harbour to mark the death of Michael Gray, a central character in the show.

And don't be surprised if you spot dolphins frolicking in the bay! The large statue at the beach entrance is a bit of a giveaway. 😉
