RED CEDAR WOODS
Giants of Nature
These fast-growing trees called Japanese Red Cedar, cover large parts of Terceira Island. They help prevent soil erosion, act as windbreaks, and provide valuable timber.
While not a native species, they've become an iconic part of the Azorean landscape.
In their native habitat they can grow up to 70 metres (over 200 feet) tall! Imagine a tree taller than a 20-story building!
In the Azores they tend to be a bit shorter, usually reaching around 40-50 metres (130-160 feet). Still pretty massive!
Want to see them for yourself? Head to the "Reserva Florestal Parcial da Serra de S. Barbara e dos Misterios Negros" for the most impressive views! 🌲
