TERCEIRA
The Purple (or Lilac) Island
Terceira: The wooden purple island with plenty of volcanic activity
They call it the "Purple Island" because of the lilac paint splashed across charming houses and “imperios” (small chapels) and the explosion of purple blooms everywhere you look. But for me, Terceira will forever be the island of those unforgettable purple sunsets! 🌅
I was completely captivated by the majestic Japanese cedar forests you find in the centre of Terceira! 🌲 I spent hours getting lost in those towering avenues. These giants aren't actually native to the Azores, but they've clearly found a happy home here and are now a landmark of the island!
If you're heading to the Azores, trust me, you need at least a week to explore Terceira. It's a surprisingly big island with SO much to see! Just a heads up: Terceira is volcanically active, so you might expect a few earthquakes. 🌋 The famous Algar do Carvão lava tube might even be closed because of this, so check before you go.
I've shared my Top 9 Terceira highlights in this post, but I could have easily chosen 20 top spots…!
