HERMANESS - SHETLAND

Hermaness: Scotland's Northernmost Frontier

Think Scotland's far north? Think again! Journey to Shetland Mainland, then take two more ferries to reach Hermaness. Hike to the edge and gaze upon Muckle Flugga lighthouse - once Britain's most northerly inhabited outpost. Now you are REALLY high up north!

🥾 The hike is strenuous but rewarding. Expect 3-4 hours return with plenty of ups and downs along dramatic cliffs. Allow a full day if you're into photography - every corner begs to be captured! 📸

😲 Prepare to be awestruck! The cliff edge plunges 600ft to the sea. No fences, just raw, breathtaking nature. I felt incredibly small, standing on “top of the world”.

Continue along the cliffs to spot Muckle Flugga lighthouse, sea stacks, stunning coastline, and countless puffins! Oh, and plenty of woolly companions too!

The return journey is easier, thanks to a boardwalk protecting the peatland and nesting birds.

✨ Trust me, every step is worth it! Consider staying overnight on Unst to truly savour this incredible place.

📅 Best time to visit: May to August for puffin season and milder weather..
